Alex is a winner!

It is with much pride and joy that I announce that my son Alex was chosen as this years winner in an essay contest. The essay's theme was 'hometown hero'. The children had to choose a person that symbolized what a hero meant to him or her. My son chose the doctor who saved and repaired my crushed hand. To me he is a hero too, and I will be forever grateful for his skills as a hand surgeon. His essay was displayed for all to see at Annapolis Mall. Saturday we go to the awards ceremony where he will stand on stage and read the essay aloud. I would be a nervous wreck but he is excited. He gets a lot of goodies as his prize as well as a certificate.
This is a major accomplishment for Alex, everyone knows how much this child has struggled to learn to read and write fluently. He has been in tutoring for years and this just might be what he needed to get over the hump, so to speak. His school and teachers were NOT the judges, this was a state wide contest and the judges were all outside the school system. As you can tell, I am a very surprised but elated mother.
After the mornings award ceremony, we zoom on over to the Crofton Go cart Raceway to celebrate a very late birthday for Alex. He turned 10 in March but he wanted to celebrate by having a Go Cart party. Unfortunately, the weather in March is very unpredictable and I convinced him to wait until May. May is so beautiful, always, and I can quietly celebrate my own 41st birthday without actually annoucing it...:)
